Understanding Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Thresholds

When most people think about VO₂ max testing, they focus on one number: their VO₂ max score. While that measurement is an excellent indicator of cardiovascular fitness, it tells only part of the story.

One of the most valuable pieces of information we gain from a VO₂ max test is identifying your aerobic threshold (AeT) and anaerobic threshold (AT). These physiological markers reveal how your body produces energy, how efficiently you exercise, and how to train smarter—not just harder.

Let’s take a closer look at what these thresholds mean and how we use them to create personalized training recommendations.

What Is the Aerobic Threshold?

Your aerobic threshold is the exercise intensity where your body begins transitioning from very easy activity into moderate exercise.

At this point:

  • Your body is primarily burning fat for fuel.
  • Oxygen delivery easily meets your muscles’ demands.
  • Lactate production remains very low and is cleared as quickly as it’s produced.
  • You can comfortably maintain this effort for a long period of time.

Think of aerobic threshold as your “all-day pace.” Whether you’re walking briskly, hiking, cycling, or running, staying near this threshold develops your aerobic engine and improves endurance.

Why It Matters

Training around your aerobic threshold helps you:

  • Improve fat metabolism
  • Increase endurance
  • Build a stronger cardiovascular foundation
  • Recover more efficiently
  • Exercise longer before fatigue sets in

For many people, spending more time training in this zone leads to greater long-term fitness improvements than constantly exercising at high intensity.


What Is the Anaerobic Threshold?

As exercise intensity continues to increase, your body eventually reaches its anaerobic threshold, often called your lactate threshold.

This is the point where:

  • Your muscles begin producing lactate faster than your body can remove it.
  • Breathing becomes noticeably heavier.
  • Speaking in full sentences becomes difficult.
  • Fatigue begins accumulating much more rapidly.

Above this threshold, your body relies more heavily on carbohydrates for energy because they can be converted into fuel much faster than fat.

While you can exercise above your anaerobic threshold, you can only sustain it for a limited amount of time before exhaustion forces you to slow down.


How VO₂ Max Testing Identifies These Thresholds

During a VO₂ max test, you wear a metabolic mask that measures every breath you take while the exercise intensity gradually increases.

The equipment continuously analyzes:

  • Oxygen consumption (VO₂)
  • Carbon dioxide production (VCO₂)
  • Ventilation
  • Breathing rate
  • Heart rate

As your workload increases, these measurements reveal exactly where your body transitions from primarily aerobic metabolism to increasingly anaerobic metabolism.

Instead of estimating your training zones using age-based formulas, we identify your actual physiological thresholds based on how your body responds to exercise.

This creates training zones that are individualized, accurate, and much more effective.


Why These Thresholds Are More Valuable Than Maximum Heart Rate

Many fitness watches estimate training zones using formulas like:

220 − Age = Maximum Heart Rate

While simple, this method can be inaccurate by 10–20 beats per minute or more.

Two people of the same age can have dramatically different aerobic and anaerobic thresholds depending on their fitness level, genetics, and training history.

VO₂ max testing removes the guesswork by measuring where your thresholds actually occur.

Instead of training based on averages, you train based on your physiology.

How We Use Your Thresholds

Once we’ve identified your aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, we can build precise heart rate training zones.

These zones help determine:

Zone 1 – Recovery
Very light activity that promotes recovery, improves circulation, and prepares your body for future training sessions.

Zone 2 – Aerobic Development
This is where we encourage most of our clients to spend the majority of their training time. Zone 2 improves your body’s ability to use fat as fuel, strengthens your aerobic system, increases mitochondrial function, and builds the endurance needed for long-term health and performance.

Zone 3 – Moderate Intensity
This is often called the “gray zone.” While it certainly has a place in specific training programs, many people spend too much time here. The intensity is high enough to create additional fatigue but often not low enough to maximize aerobic adaptations or high enough to produce the greatest performance gains. Because of this, we generally limit unnecessary Zone 3 training and instead emphasize spending more time below the aerobic threshold or intentionally above the anaerobic threshold, depending on the individual’s goals.

Zone 4 – Threshold Training
Used strategically to improve your body’s ability to sustain higher exercise intensities before fatigue sets in. This is especially valuable for runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes.

Zone 5 – Maximal Effort
Short, high-intensity intervals designed to improve VO₂ max, speed, and power. These sessions are challenging but make up a relatively small portion of most training programs.
