Break through stiffness. Restore movement. Feel the relief.
At Transitions Physical Therapy, we use the Graston Technique® to help break down scar tissue, improve mobility, and relieve chronic or post-injury discomfort. This evidence-based soft tissue therapy uses specialized stainless-steel instruments to gently detect and treat areas of restriction—getting you back to pain-free movement, faster.
What is the Graston technique?
The Graston Technique is a form of Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). It involves applying controlled pressure with patented tools to:
- Break up scar tissue and fascial restrictions
- Stimulate blood flow and healing
- Improve range of motion and tissue mobility
- Decrease pain, inflammation, and stiffness
It’s a safe, targeted method that enhances your body’s natural healing response—often used in conjunction with exercise and rehab plans.

What to expect
During your Graston session, a licensed physical therapist will use specialized stainless-steel instruments to gently glide over your skin, identifying and treating areas of restriction or tightness. You may feel mild discomfort or tenderness—similar to a deep tissue massage—as we break down scar tissue and stimulate healing. Sessions are typically 10–20 minutes and are often combined with stretching, mobility work, or therapeutic exercise to maximize results. Some redness or soreness afterward is normal and typically short-lived.
Who can benefit?
Graston is ideal for anyone dealing with chronic muscle tightness, post-surgical or post-injury scar tissue, or conditions like tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and IT band syndrome. It’s also highly effective for improving limited range of motion caused by soft tissue restrictions. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or addressing long-standing mobility issues, the Graston Technique can help restore natural, pain-free movement.
