Run Smarter, not Harder

If you’re working toward running goals like a 5k, 10k, or even your first marathon, improving your running economy can help you get there smarter—not harder. Especially between ages 40 and 70, being intentional about how you run can reduce wear and tear on your joints and keep you moving well for years to come.

Let’s break it down into three essentials: form and technique, strength and mobility, and smart training.

Form & Technique: Avoid overstriding. Light, quick steps (around 180 steps per minute) reduce impact and improve efficiency. Keep your posture tall—no slouching—and think of running “light.”

Strength & Mobility: A strong core and glutes keep your stride stable and efficient. Weak hips can shift the load elsewhere, often causing back or knee pain. Incorporating mobility exercises and strength work 2–3 times a week makes a big difference.

Train Smarter: Not every run should look the same. Mix it up with tempo runs, intervals, and longer slow runs. Variety helps your body adapt and improves performance over time.

Running after 40 is absolutely possible—and can be even more enjoyable when you’re training with intention.

What’s your next running goal—are you eyeing a 10k, or just aiming to stay consistent each week? Let’s talk about it at your next visit!
